Fall running is almost here.

Like or not, believe or not – fall is around the corner. We actually had our first “skiff” of snowfall up high and that was in August. So what will Fall weather hold? Cold temps, cool morning and evening air? What about the changing of the leaves? Well personally I am excited! I enjoy running on our amazing single track and hearing the crunching of leaves under my not so fast moving feet. I love fall running. It rejuvenates me and let me tell you, I need it.

So we here at N.U.T.S. headquarters want to know where you like to run in the fall and why.

Leave a comment- come on it’s E-Z! Oh and while you are at it, sign up for the Howlin’ Wolf 20k.

Howlin’ Wolf 20k

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!!!!!!!

Howlin’ Wolf 20k
October 2nd, 2010
Start Time: 8 A.M.

Course Description:
Starting at the base of the ski resort run north on the service road. Veer right onto a single track that takes you up through a stand of trees and deposits you at the top of Wolf Lair ski lift. From the top of this lift you will join the service road and run this south for a short distance looking for the cross country shortcut to Pine Creek trail. Once on the Pine Creek, climb this scenic trail for about 3 miles and 1000 feet of vertical gain to the top of Wolf Creek Ski resort. Once at the top of the resort you will find a fully stocked aid station. After filling up on some water or EFS, join the single track that heads north and corkscrews down the mountain and joins the service road above Wolf lair chairlift. Again, run up the service road but this time you will go all the way to the top. After visiting the aid station back track down the service road a short distance and find the single track on the south side of the resort and take a second corkscrew trail down the mountain until it joins the Pine Creek trail. Run the Pine Creek trail north for a short distance and veer left onto a service road that brings you back to the Green Mile and climb it back to the top of the ski area for a final time. After your quick visit to the aid station join the Pine Creek trail for your final descent to the finish line.

Overview:
-3 summits of Wolf Creek
- 2 Corkscrew single track descents
- 12-ish miles of fun

Wolf Mountain 5k & 10k Info for runners

We are very excited for Saturday and our first race up at beautiful Wolf Mountain! Here are some details of the race and things you need to know.

Check In and Packet Pick Up

You can pick up your race packet and check in starting at 7 am Saturday morning at Wolf Mountain. We will be starting the race at 8 am so please make sure you get there to check in, get your bib fastened tight and listen to the pre race instruction. Those running the 5k will be shuttled up on the lift to the start so please arrive early so we can get everyone on top of the mountain before 8 am. We encourage everyone to listen while the course description is being given. The course will be marked but we want to answer any questions before the start.

Course

The 10k course begins at the base of the resort and follows a double track road heading north. The course veers right onto a single track that winds up through some trees and ends at the top of Wolf’s Lair chair lift. From this chair lift the single track joins a service road (the Green Mile). Follow this service road to the top of the resort. From the top of the resort you will join the Pine Creek Trail. Follow the Pine Creek Trail back to the resort where you will climb to the top a second time (yippee). From the top you will follow a single track to the intersection of the Pine Creek trail and the resort boundary. From this intersection, you will follow a single track to the finish.

The course is not closed to the public so you will still see people on the trail. The course is primarily single track and a little fire road. There are no mile markers, no screaming fans and absolutely no cars.  Please visit the website to get some detailed information of the course. It is in great shape and ripe for a course record- hey, it’s the first time so someone in gonna get it. Notre: Bring a camera, the views are spectacular.

Aid Stations

The 10k course will have 3 aid stations. Aid stations 1 and 3 will have water and EFS electrolyte drink- 2 is water only. The 5k course starts at the top of the resort and follows the Pine Creek trail to the resort boundary and finishes on the winding single track. The 5k course will have 1 aid station stocked with water. These are fun and not too long so aid stations will have water and EFS or water only. The finish is where the food is located so the quicker you get there the quicker you get to eat.

Odds and Ends

First and foremost, this race is for you. We want everyone to come and have a great time. In doing so we ask that you please respect the trails and the entire mountain.

If you are caught littering you will be removed from the race. There are trash cans and bags so please do not drop trash, chances are it is lighter after you use it anyway- i.e. gels and bars.

Please stay the course, it will be marked. There is no prize money so there is no need to cut the course.

Make sure you race bib is visible.

Race distances are not exact- there may be a little (.something) but hey, they are trail races.

Please be nice and considerate to the volunteers, they are just that- VOLUNTEERS. They are there for you and without them this race would not be possible.

Like we mentioned earlier, this is a trail race and there will not be mile markers.

If you decide you want to run with your dog, they are allowed but they must be leashed. It is the law anyway…right?

Lastly- if you have friends or family that wants to run, they can register race morning. If you know of someone who needs to register make sure they are there early so we can get them signed up and started on time.

We want to thank you all for signing up. We have run both courses several times and we know you will enjoy them. Wolf Mountain was kind enough to let us use their mountain for this event so please thank them.

After the race we will be doing a raffle for some cool products. There will also be refreshments at the finish.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Thanks!

Manners

Contest Winner!!!!

First- thanks for all the emails and votes. Pretty excited to see so many people chime in. We sure love contests! The winning saying/motto/tagline/etc is: “If you’re not running trails, it’s your own asphalt!”- however, this was put in by the NUTS committee so we cannot win teh comp entry so we will be giving a comp entry to the 5k or 10k for Saturday to runner-up: “No dirt? No rocks?….No N.U.T.S.!

Congrats to BJ for the comp entry! Thanks again for all those who submitted entries and the 47 voters out there!!!!! Yep- 47 voters. Not bad, not bad at all!
